The following study aims to analyze the knowledge management practice adopted by the Instituto Federal de Educação Ciência e Tecnologia do Maranhão (Federal Institution of Education, Science and Technology of Maranhão) - IFMA, part of the Public Authority indirect administration. It's a descriptive research using a quantitative method and as a research strategy, the case study. The instrument used for the data gathering was a survey that adopted the knowledge management model proposed by Terra (2005). The obtained results enabled verifying that the practices of the knowledge management at IFMA still constitutes of an incipient process. They are isolated practices associated with the knowledge management; which are just discussed with effectiveness nowadays. The study shows that the main condition for the Knowledge Management process implementation in the public administration is the commitment of the top management, the focus for a development of the human resources, more transparency, use and share of the technology information and communication, and mainly, focus for the citizen/client/consumer/partner. This commitment should work to unite efforts so it could encourage the best knowledge management practices in the public administration.
