Objective: Analyzes the literature on Colombian rock art with application of the diffusion of innovations model of Bass.
Methods: Published documents were collected using multiple Boolean combinations of keywords in Spanish and English in bibliographic databases, repositories and library catalogs. The bibliographic references that were found were exported to a bibliographic database designed in EndNote (Version X8). The analysis of the data was done with Microsoft Excel to map demography of the literature and the Bass model was used to find the rate of adopters of this literature.
Results: It was found 303 publications produced by 217 different authors, spread in different types of documents from 1853 to November 2018. The published works on Colombian rock art have been disseminated in the form of articles (34%), information available on web pages (19%) and books (17%) that are written mainly in Spanish (80%). The coefficient of innovation p (0.194%) shows that adopters of this research topic have a weak external influence factor. The coefficient of imitation q (24.8162%) shows that the internal influence factor has a high impact on the adopters of publications on this topic. The rate of adoption of the literature on rock art will be at its highest point approximately by the year 2049.
Conclusions: Bass’s model estimates that when 923 researchers were writing and publishing on this subject, this topic will have gotten maturity and then it will begin to decline, or, to transform.
