Objective: To analyze the production and scientific scope on the theme plagiarism in the Scopus basis. Identify the most productive themes, co-authors, institutions, journals and authors. Show the scientific reach of production through the characteristics of its citing.
Methods: The research is bibliometric exploratory. It proposes to broaden the understanding of the Brazilian context about this scientific production.
Results: The results highlight that plagiarism, scientific and ethical misconduct are the most mentioned keywords. Co-authoring was conducted with Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, France and India. The most productive institutions are represented by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the University of São Paulo (USP). As for the most productive journals, the highlight is the “Revista Brasileira de Educação”. Among the most productive authors is the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), represented by Vasconcelos, S.M.R. The highlight citings come from the United States and Brazil, especially the USP and UFRJ institutions. The prominent citing journal is Dutch-based Scientometrics. Referring to the authors who made the most citations are Amancio, D.R. (USP) and Vasconcelos, S.M.R. (UFRJ).
Conclusions: The results achieved allowed us to broaden our understanding of the Brazilian productive context regarding plagiarism. Brazil is able to lead the Latin American actions on the plagiarism issue in scientific production. Therefore, the guarantees of communicated knowledge depend on an understanding of science theory and intellectual honesty in the use of research methods.
