Documentary analysis of fictional literature (1978-2020): articles categorization, techniques and criteria identification based on a systematic review in the Information Science Database (BRAPCI) and the Library & Information Science Abstracts Database (LISA)

Objective: To investigate the production in the Library & Information Science Abstracts database and the Brazilian production in the Information Science Database on the theme of documentary analysis of fictional literature. To categorize the documents according to their proposals. To identify the techniques and criteria for the documentary reading of fictional works.
Methods: The research is exploratory as to the objectives and uses as technical procedure the systematic review, as some documents retrieved did not address the subject in question, we adopted inclusion and exclusion criteria to filter the research, in the Library & Information Science Abstracts (LISA) 29 articles dated from 1978 to 2019 were included, and in the Database on Information Science (BRAPCI) seven researches prepared between 2007 and 2020. The retrieved documents were synthesized highlighting objectives, methodologies, results and conclusions, categorized according to the approach adopted, and also showed the techniques for document reading that stood out in the studies.
Results: It was identified that the indexing process has been discussed for over 40 years, and in this period schemes and methods have been developed specifically for fiction in order to fill information gaps; more empirical research focused on product evaluation has been developed, and the techniques for documentary reading highlighted were the Four Dimensions of Fiction, the 11 Principles of the Annotated Card Program, the Generative Path of Sense, and the Model for Indexing Fiction – MENTIF.
Conclusions: Fiction is being addressed in the indexing process, even if slowly, and that there are methods and schemes for the documentary reading of fiction, but they need to be more widely disseminated, and addressing the subject during librarian training can be an important step to change this reality.
