Abstract

Objective: To present and discuss graduation plaques as informational and memorial artifacts that go beyond their commemorative function, highlighting their potential for organization, retrieval, and preservation in institutional collections, and to investigate how they can be systematically described and represented.

Methods: This qualitative, exploratory, and analytical study proposes an initial model of descriptive representation grounded in AACR2 and adapted to the specificities of graduation plaques as a documentary type. The model is articulated with a discussion of subject representation through analytical categories aimed at identifying material, symbolic, and social elements, and engages with the evidential paradigm as an interpretative perspective for reading clues embedded in the materiality, visual composition, and textual statements of the plaques. As an illustrative application, a graduation plaque from the Social Work program is analyzed

Results: The findings indicate that graduation plaques present descriptive and thematic attributes that can be systematized, enabling their inclusion in information organization systems, and demonstrate the relevance of the evidential paradigm for interpreting their symbolic and memorial dimensions

Conclusions: It is concluded that the adoption of adapted descriptive models and expanded interpretative approaches contributes to recognizing graduation plaques as significant documents for institutional memory and for the field of knowledge organization.

Everton Fernandes de Lima, Universidade Federal da Paraíba

Master's and doctoral candidate in Information Science at the Postgraduate Program in Information Science of the Federal University of Paraíba (PPGCI/UFPB). Bachelor's degree in Library Science from UFPB. Substitute Professor in the Department of Information Science (DCI/UFPB). Member of the Study and Research Group on Culture, Information, Memory and Heritage (GECIMP/UFPB), Study and Research Group on Sociology, Communication and Information (GEPSC/UFPBI), former member of the Study and Research Group on Bibliographic and Documentary Heritage (GEPPBD/UFBA). Technician in Graphic Computing from the Paraíba Association for Renewed Education (ASPER). Served between 2021 and 2022 as 2nd secretary of the Professional Association of Librarians of Paraíba (APBPB). Works in Applied Social Sciences with an emphasis on Information Science, collaborating mainly on the following themes: Memory of UFPB (Federal University of Paraíba), institutional memory, private and public libraries, culture, preservation of documents and manuscripts, and university extension. During undergraduate studies, worked as an intern and extension worker at the Central Library of UFPB and as a recipient of a Scientific Initiation scholarship.

Edvaldo Carvalho Alves, Universidade Federal da Paraíba

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Paraíba (2000), a Master's degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of São Carlos (2002), and a Doctorate in Social Sciences from the Federal University of São Carlos (2007). He is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Information Science (DCI) and the Postgraduate Program in Information Science (PPGCI) at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), where he teaches, develops, and supervises research in the areas of Sociology and Information Science, with an emphasis on: Sociology and Political Economy of Information, Communication and Culture, Research Methodology in Information Science, and Informational Practices.

Geysa Flávia Câmara de Lima, Universidade Federal da Paraíba

She holds a degree in Library Science from UFPB, a specialization in Information Unit Management (UFPB), a master's degree in Information Science (UFPB), and a doctorate in Information Science (UFPB). She is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Information Science/CCSA/UFPB, working in teaching, research, extension, and management. She served as Librarian at the Center for Social, Human and Agrarian Sciences/CCHSA/UFPB and at the Center for Human Sciences, Letters and Arts/CCHLA/UFPB (2004-2009), vice-coordinator of the Undergraduate Course in Archival Studies/CCSA/UFPB (2009-2010), and coordinator of the Undergraduate Course in Library Science/CCSA/UFPB (2011-2014). She also served as Coordinator of Student Assistance and Promotion at the Pro-Rectorate for Student Assistance and Promotion/PRAPE/UFPB (2016-2020) and is head of the Department of Information Science/UFPB (2021- ). She has experience as a coordinator or collaborating member of research, monitoring, and extension projects. She is a researcher in the Study and Research Group on Culture, Information, Memory, and Heritage. The main themes of her work involve information management, memory and society, organization, access and use of information, preservation and conservation of collections.

Maria Elizabeth Baltar Carneiro de Albuquerque, Universidade Federal da Paraíba

Full Professor in the Department of Information Science and the Postgraduate Program in Information Science at the Federal University of Paraíba, holding a Bachelor's degree in Letters from the Catholic University of Pernambuco (1983), a Bachelor's degree in Library Science from the Federal University of Pernambuco (1984), a Master's degree in Library Science from the Federal University of Paraíba (1992), a Doctorate in Letters from the Federal University of Paraíba (2011), and a Post-doctorate in Information Science from the University of São Paulo (2016). Leader of the Research Group Reading, Organization, Representation, Production and Use of Information. Has experience in the field of Information Science, with an emphasis on Library Science, working mainly on the following themes: Thematic Representation, Descriptive Representation, Popular Culture, Popular Literature, Discursive Semantics. In the undergraduate Library Science program, she teaches courses in Thematic Representation and Descriptive Representation. In the Postgraduate Program in Information Science at the Federal University of Paraíba, she teaches the subject Information and Knowledge Representation. She received the 2012 Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade Award, promoted by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), at the state level, in the Research and Inventory of Collections category with her thesis, and was recommended for the award at the national level. She also obtained international recognition for her thesis, being invited by the UDC Consortium to participate in the update of the Universal Decimal Classification. She received the Diploma of Honor for Cultural Merit from the Academy of Cordel Literature of the Paraíba Valley (2016). She received the Award in the Regional Stage of the 35th Edition of the Rodrigo Melo de Andrade Award, 2022, promoted by IPHAN, with the action: Preservation of Cordel Literature as a way to safeguard intangible cultural heritage. She is a full member of the Academy of Cordel Literature of the Paraíba Valley. She is a columnist for the Cordel Literature column in the international magazine The Bard (ISSN - 2764-9768).

Bernardina Maria Juvenal Freire de Oliveira, Universidade Federal da Paraíba

Doctor of Letters from the Federal University of Paraíba, Master in Information Science from the Federal University of Paraíba (1999), Specialist in Archive Organization, Specialist in Distance Education Administration, Bachelor's degree in Library Science from the Federal University of Paraíba (1988). Associate Professor at the Federal University of Paraíba. Former coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Information Science at the Federal University of Paraíba. In the postgraduate program in Information Science, she teaches the subjects Information, Memory and Society, and Information, Memory and Identity, and supervises master's and doctoral students. She worked with the Postgraduate Program in Learning Organizations (PPGOA), teaching the subject Qualitative Research. Former Vice-coordinator of the PPGOA. At the undergraduate level, she teaches in the Library Science undergraduate course, in the subjects of History of Reading and Records of Knowledge and Memory. Experience in the field of cultural history and memory, with an emphasis on the production and circulation of reading materials and the organization of personal private archives.
