John Rawls and the universal basic income

This paper aims to briefly present John Rawls’s theory of justice — known as “justice as fairness” — and, based on it, to discuss the proposal of a universal basic income. According to Philippe Van Parijs and Yannick Vanderborght, basic income would be compatible with Rawls’s difference principle. Rawls himself, however, does not offer a specific normative justification for this proposal. Accordingly, the article investigates whether certain focused income support measures — like continuous payments to individuals involved in unpaid household and caregiving labor — may be normatively grounded in Rawls’s theory.
