Aethetics and politics in contemporary Brazil: Terra em transe and Maranhão 66 revisited

This paper revisits the films Terra em Transe and Maranhão 66, by Glauber Rocha. They are aesthetic-political documents from the 1960s in Brazil, which get new colors in the present days. Therefore, it considers the dialectical tradition, represented here by Theodor W. Adorno, between social form and aesthetic expression. Regarding to this, it analyzes constructive options, narratives and techniques of the films, observing them as Oeuvres that mature over time, pointing, retrospectively, to national impasses. At the same time, it traces, in composition with the films, the historical context that unfolded in the decades following them. The current anti-democratic environment, as well as the rise of Luís Inácio Lula da Silva as national iconic figure, and the emblematic trajectory of José Sarney, offer the social incarnation of what the films expressively present. It concludes by pointing out the impasse and the need to find an aesthetic lighting that is capable of meeting the hardships of the present.
