Abstract

This essay offers an investigation into the general concept of "violence." A definition of the term is proposed here, considering what is taken as its most basic use, that is, to capture a relationship between a set of actions and some kind of damage. As a result of this first investigation, considerations about different illocutionary uses of the term are derived, suggesting that the term can fluctuate between different evaluative loads. Finally, we discuss how certain assumptions not evaluated about the term appear in everyday discussions and how some of these discussions are affected by such implicit assumptions.
