Fleck’s notion of truth and the circulation of scientific knowledge: elements to think about the post-truth era

Abstract

Debates on post-truth have been discussing its different aspects, since its philosophical, social and historical aspects, passing through linguistic, psychological, and axiological issues, until its political and ethical implications. The aim of the present work is try to understand the post-truth phenomenon, based on Ludwik Fleck’s epistemology, and reflect on its implications to science and science education. For this, we explore Fleck’s notion of truth and his description of circulation of scientific knowledge processes. We conclude that Fleck’s perspective can be an interesting alternative to think about the post-truth phenomenon. For Fleck, there is a relationship of authority, trust, and mutual dependency between specialized and popular knowledge. It is important to maintain this relationship with these aspects to preserve democracy and avoid the emergence of dogmatic and antidemocratic social movements. It also seems important to limit dissemination of ideas, which can be dangerous for the democratic aspect of science and for its own existence. Finally, a popularization of science and a scientific education which discuss the whole complexity of the construction of scientific knowledge can better contribute to form images about science less susceptible to the harmful effects of post-truth.

Marcia Tiemi Saito, Instituto Federal do Paraná, campus Foz do Iguaçu

Docente no Instituto Federal do Paraná (IFPR) – campus Foz do Iguaçu. Possui graduação em Bacharelado (2009) e Licenciatura em Física (2014), mestrado em Ciências (Modalidade Física, 2013) e doutorado em Ciências (área de concentração: Ensino de Física, 2019), pela Universidade de São Paulo. Realizou estágio de doutorado sanduíche no grupo de pesquisa SPHERE, na Universidade de Paris 7 – Denis Diderot, na França. Atua principalmente nas áreas de História, Filosofia e Sociologia da Ciência no Ensino de Ciências. Faz parte do Grupo de Teoria e História do Conhecimento (TeHCo) e do Grupo de pesquisa em Educação em Ciências e Matemática (GPECiM – IFPR), e tem interesse nos temas: Circulação do conhecimento científico, natureza da ciência, história da Física Quântica e moderna, epistemologia de Ludwik Fleck, epistemologia histórica e relações entre Ciência e Cultura. Também possui experiência como professora de Física nos níveis médio, superior e trabalha com formação de professores no curso de Licenciatura em Física do IFPR, Foz do Iguaçu.
