This article addresses the difficulties faced by 3rd year high school students with regard to identifying and describing the constitutive phases of argumentative sequences present in the initial production of an opinion article. The data collected were carried out before the pandemic. The research consists of a documentary and exploratory analysis, as it involves respectively an analysis of guidance for writing in a didactic manual and a reduced number of productions written by collaborating subjects. The theoretical axis for data analysis is represented by contributions from social-discursive interactionist studies, particularly the concepts of “conditions and text production”, “strata of textual puffs” and “argumentative sequence” Bronckart (1999) and Coutinho (2013). The results obtained showed the students' difficulty in maintaining the sequence of argumentative phases in the written production of the opinion article genre.
