Lesbianities, rape and violence: an analysis of police and journalistic records

Abstract

In this work, we discuss the violence to which lesbianities are subjected based on police records and journalistic reports. We are interested in observing how heteronormativity operates in news coverage of these crimes, especially in cases of rape involving lesbian victims, as well as in identifying characteristics and patterns in the approaches found in both police and journalistic records regarding such cases. We understand that public safety and the media play an important role in identifying, describing, and echoing these crimes and their specificities, which should contribute to addressing this context. However, we observe that, most of the time, the reports produced by law enforcement institutions are journalistically appropriated in a highly reductionist manner, often exacerbating the erasure of lesbianities of the victims and, consequently, the violence directed towards this sexual dissidence.
