The aim of this article is to state the constraints and challenges faced by the Media and Journalism in the first quarter of the 21st century. In order to understand the changes in progress, contexts are plotted, taking into account the processes of globalization, the technological transformations, the economic crisis of 2008 and the populist threats experienced by the western democracies. With this big picture, we discussed the economic, financial and technological changes that underlie the operation of the media, taking into account the role of technological companies and digital convergence. What is today understood as the media? What is the relation to technological platforms? To what extent are there populist synergies between media content, citizens’ aspirations and journalistic activity? How Journalism and its professionals manage the changes and adapted itself to another ecosystem? These are the questions that will guide this reflection.
