Silencing on traditional media and fake news: The Occupy Estelita Case as a starting point for a reflection on the theme

Abstract

Using the coverage of the occupation of Cais José Estelita in Recife (PE) in 2014 as a basis, and aiming to evaluate the ten years of the movement completed in 2024, we consider how the silencing of themes related to the social movement Ocupe Estelita points to a certain emptiness and discrediting of the mainstream media. This can contribute to the emergence of fake news as a social phenomenon. Therefore, an analysis of printed newspapers from Pernambuco was conducted between May and June 2014. This analysis compared the space given to the different sides of the debate (Movimento Ocupe Estelita and Consórcio Novo Recife), taking into account the events that occurred at the time.

Doutora em Comunicação Social pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco e Mestre em Sociologia pela mesma universidade. Professora do Departamento de Comunicação Social e membro do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação Social da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. Autora do livro Admirável Comunicação Nova: Um estudo sobre a comunicação nas distopias literárias. Realiza pesquisas sobre comunicação, ambientes virtuais e inteligências artificiais.

Juliana do Rego Barros Alves Cavalcanti, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco

Possui mestrado em Comunicação Social pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - UFPE (2019), graduação em Comunicação Social - Jornalismo pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - UFPE (1999). Especialização em Jornalismo e Crítica Cultural pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - UFPE (2003). Atua como Assessora de Comunicação na ONG Gestos - Soropositividade, Comunicação e Gênero. Foi repórter do caderno de Economia do Diario de Pernambuco (2008-2015), tem experiência nas áreas edição, reportagem, assessoria de comunicação, internet e redes sociais. Interesse em Ciências Humanas e Sociais.
