Social Work intervention and violence against women

This article is a synthesis of a study conducted among social workers who attend women who are victims of violence. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the role of Social Work in this field. The United Nations considers violence against women to be a Human Rights violations as well as a Public Health problem and one of the leading causes of illness among women. Violence against women is one of the main impediments to development in countries throughout the world. Historically, Social Work as a profession advanced in parallel to the conquests of the feminist movement, yet only recently has violence against women been on the social service agenda. The article presents theoretical and methodological approaches to the problem and discusses related public policy.
