The article proposes to analyze the mutual interferences of intellectual and political fields during the Estado Novo regime in Brazil. On one hand, Oliveira Vianna argued for the adoption of an authoritarian government as a means to guarantee order and national unity. In the name of a supposed “political realism”, he strongly criticized liberal elites whom he accused of “utopian idealism”. On the other hand, ideas of this sort were used by the State to legitimate the regime’s political practices, as we intend to demonstrate for the case of Rio Grande do Sul, using actions taken by interventors and state administrators (Administrative Department of Public Service- DASP) as examples. Keywords: Estado Novo; authoritarianism; intellectuals; politics.Downloads
