The present article presents a critical perspective of the hegemonic interpretation which sustains that in 1961, after Jânio Quadro renounced, there was a frustrated attempt at a military coup, demonstrated by the fact that João Goulart was then able to assume the presidency. We argue that what in fact occurred was a civil-military coup in which the nation’s Congress took part. Keywords: 1961 coup, João Goulart, Brazilian National Congress.Downloads
