The civil-military coup of 1961: critique of hegemonic explanations.

Abstract

The present article presents a critical perspective of the hegemonic interpretation which sustains that in 1961, after Jânio Quadro renounced, there was a frustrated attempt at a military coup, demonstrated by the fact that João Goulart was then able to assume the presidency. We argue that what in fact occurred was a civil-military coup in which the nation’s Congress took part. Keywords: 1961 coup, João Goulart, Brazilian National Congress.

Daniel de Mendonça, Universidade Federal de Pelotas

Possui graduação em Ciências Jurídicas e Sociais pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (1997), mestrado (2001) e doutorado (2006) em Ciência Política pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Atualmente, é Professor Adjunto na Universidade Federal de Pelotas. Tem experiência na área de Ciência Política, com ênfase em Teoria Política Contemporânea e Política Brasileira, enfocando principalmente os seguintes temas: teoria democrática, teoria do discurso, hegemonia e política brasileira.
