Hans Reichenbach’s Philosophy of Space: Empiricism, Realism and Relationism

We propose in this paper a reassessment of Reichenbach’s magnum opus, The Philosophy of Space & Time (1958 [1927]), with a particular emphasis on the first part of the work, devoted to the philosophy of space. First, it is necessary to understand the profound significance of the dual distinction between physical space and mathematical spaces (ch.2), and the role of coordinative definitions within the system of geometries (ch.3), in order to grasp the author’s radical defense of the principle of geometric relativity (ch.4). Finally, we will examine his coordinative classification of space kinds and his defense of spatial three-dimensionality (ch.5). Questions: (a) In what sense does Reichenbach align with Poincaré’s conventionalism, and in which aspects does he diverge? (b) What is the meaning of real geometry for Reichenbach, and how can we understand the concept of real space in his work? – Our conclusions are in favor of the relational perspective of physical space defended by the author. Furthermore, we will reclaim the importance of his legacy, purging it of deconstructive criticisms and continuing the developments made by Adolf Grünbaum.
