A Filosofia do Espaço de Hans Reichenbach: Empirismo, Realismo e Relacionismo

Resumo

Neste artigo, propomos uma reavaliação da obra magna de Reichenbach, The Philosophy of Space & Time (1958 [1927]), com especial ênfase na primeira parte do livro, dedicada à Filosofia do Espaço. Primeiramente, é necessário compreender o profundo significado da sua dual distinção entre espaço físico e espaços matemáticos (cap. 2), bem como o papel das definições coordenativas no sistema das geometrias (cap. 3), para então esclarecer a sua radical defesa pelo princípio da relatividade geométrica (cap. 4). Por fim, examinaremos a sua classificação coordenativa dos tipos de espaço e a defesa pela tridimensionalidade espacial (cap. 5). Questões: (a) Em que sentido Reichenbach se alinha ao convencionalismo de Poincaré e em quais aspectos dele diverge? (b) Qual é o significado da geometria real para Reichenbach e como podemos compreender o conceito de espaço real em sua obra? — Nossas conclusões favorecem a perspectiva relacional do espaço físico defendida pelo autor. Além disso, reavaliamos a importância de seu legado, depurando-o de críticas desconstrutivas e dando continuidade aos desenvolvimentos realizados por Adolf Grünbaum.

Filipe Pamplona, Universidade de São Paulo

Astronomer, specialized in Epistemology and Philosophy of Physics. Main lines of research: philosophy of space, time and foundations of quantum mechanics. Postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Philosophy at the University of São Paulo (USP), with a project funded by FAPESP. PhD in Logic and Philosophy of Science by the University of Lisbon. Thesis: "Space and Subquantum Medium" (2023). Member of the groups: Philosophy of Physical Sciences (USP), Physikós (UFMS), and the Working Group on Philosophy of Physical Sciences (ANPOF).

Dennis Bessada, Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul

Astrophysicist, specialized in Cosmology and Philosophy of Physics. Associate Professor at Federal University of Southern Frontier (UFFS, campus Realeza) and currently Postdoctoral Researcher at the Philosophy Department at University of São Paulo (USP). My research fields are Classical and Quantum Cosmology; Philosophy of Space,Time and Cosmology. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Physics (IF-USP), a Master's degree in Theoretical Physics (IFT-UNESP), and a PhD in Astrophysics (National Institute for Space Research - INPE). During the PhD program I held a research scholar position at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. I also held a Postdoctoral research position at INPE in collaboration with the Institute of Cosmology, Relativity and Astrophysics of Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (ICRA-CBPF).
