Abstract

Technological development and the challenges posed globally by climate change bring to light several paradoxes for the world of work. Although some argue that technology will provide free time and a better quality of life, they forget that this new world presented on high-performance screens could probably have started in a mine, in the Global South, with people poorly paid and subject to risky activities and conditions, unhealthy, or even subjected to slavery. Therefore, the prospect of a new technological world that frees humanity from the constraints of work will obviously not be within the reach of all humanity. Mining is an extremely important activity, and we cannot imagine living in a world without the use of mineral, metallic and non-metallic raw materials. Yet, we need to have criteria to choose what is essential and what does not need to be mined. Until then, transitions play a substantial role. The end of some mining activities, mainly those related to global warming, and other, related to its hazardous or uselessness, such as asbestos, must be planned and submitted to a just transition, not allowing anyone to be left behind. Reviewing the role of taxes royalties can be a way to finance the diversification of local economies and training workers for more sustainable activities.
