This article approaches the evolution of the concept of citizenship, examining the institute across its historical development, from its origins at the classic political culture up the present days, when it is approached in its formal profile, since the postulations of law theory. Also the article analyzes the discussions established between scholars on the theme on present time, to conclude verifying that the citizenship is today a complex institute, with several significations, including formal and substantive dimensions.Downloads
