Abstract: Apparently simple, the poem “In the Middle of the Road”, written by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, in 1928, holds in much more than the monotony evoqued by the poet. This article intends to show, through an examination of the poem’s formal aspects, that these ten verses, which placed the young poet in the centre of the Modernist poetry debate, may be a variation on a medieval form, the triolet. This article focuses the solutions and compensations offered by English, Spanish and French translations and how they deal with the subtle details that make this short poem a master-piece of Brazilian poetry.
