After three years of civil war in Spain, Franco’s victory in1939 meant exile for thousands of citizens, and most Catalan intellectuals
had to leave the country. The Catalan language was banned in the public
domain and publishing in Catalan became officially forbidden. However,
despite the difficulties, some translators continued their work in exile.
