Abstract

Regarding computer-aided translations, Déjà Vu is presented here. Among other interesting features, this program has a crucial and pioneering function, which significantly contributes to improve the performance, consistency, and speed of translating: besides reusing full strings of text, as found in similar applications, it has the ability to use only partial phrases. The translator can, quickly, send into the translation memory linguistic pairs as simple as a single word and its translation, rather than just full sentences. 38 Leonel Morgado From that moment, Déjà Vu starts using those pairings to translate portions of sentences as they come up, not being limited to full sentences (if the translator so wishes, Déjà Vu can also simply show such pairings as suggestions, instead of applying them). In this way, the translator enjoys automatic support of more than just terminology and reoccurring complete sentences (the most common uses for computer-ssisted translation tools). Rather, support can now be provided regarding the way in which a particular short phrase or word combination was previously translated, in a specific project – even when such matches are not relevant enough for inclusion in glossaries or other terminology databases.
