The objective of this paper is to investigate to what extent the electronic dictionary is able to assist readers in constructing meaning from a text before they have the necessary linguistic competence in the foreign language. Two studies were conducted: the first with Portuguese-speaking university students, reading texts in English and using conventional bilingual dictionaries along with an electronic dictionary; the second study was conducted with deaf students, reading a text in Portuguese, a foreign language to them, and using a bilingual electronic dictionary equipped with sign language facilities. The results suggested that electronic dictionaries, more than the conventional ones, have the potential of anticipating performance before foreign language readers have the necessary linguistic compe tence to build meaning from text, thus, reducing the gap between those who know less from those who know more.Downloads
