Abstract

The objective of this paper is to investigate to what extent the electronic dictionary is able to assist readers in constructing meaning from a text before they have the necessary linguistic competence in the foreign language. Two studies were conducted: the first with Portuguese-speaking university students, reading texts in English and using conventional bilingual dictionaries along with an electronic dictionary; the second study was conducted with deaf students, reading a text in Portuguese, a foreign language to them, and using a bilingual electronic dictionary equipped with sign language facilities. The results suggested that electronic dictionaries, more than the conventional ones, have the potential of anticipating performance before foreign language readers have the necessary linguistic compe tence to build meaning from text, thus, reducing the gap between those who know less from those who know more.

Vilson Jose Leffa, Universidade Católica de Pelotas

Vilson J. Leffa doutorou-se em Lingüística Aplicada pela Universidade do Texas em 1984, trabalhou na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul e atualmente é professor da Universidade Católica de Pelotas. Foi duas vezes presidente da Associação de Lingüística Aplicada do Brasil (ALAB). Tem pesquisado na área de leitura, produção textual e política do ensino de línguas estrangeiras. Tem artigos publicados no Brasil e no exterior. No Brasil publicou o livro Aspectos da Leitura: Uma Perspectiva Psicolingüística (1996) e organizou vários outros: Autonomy in Language Learning (1994), O ensino da leitura e produção textual ; alternativas de renovação (Com Aracy Pereira em 1999), As palavras e sua companhia ; o léxico na aprendizagem (2000), O professor de línguas estrangeiras; construindo a profissão ( em duas edições: 2001 e 2006), A interação na aprendizagem das línguas (em duas edições: 2003 e 2006), Produção de materiais de ensino: teoria e prática (2003) e Pesquisa em Lingüística Aplicada : temas e métodos (2006) . Organizou também o CD-ROM Textos em Lingüística Aplicada (TELA), em três edições (2000, 2003 e 2006). Mais recentemente concentrou-se no estudo das novas tecnologias no ensino de línguas, incluindo o computador e o ensino a distância.
