An investigation on the role of referentiality in the interpretation of relative clauses in Brazilian Portuguese

Resumo

Neste artigo, apresentamos um experimento off-line que realizamos para investigar a influência da referencialidade na interpretação de orações relativas no português brasileiro. Cláusulas relativas associadas a SNs complexos parecem estar preferencialmente ligadas ao substantivo que é referencial. Esse efeito de referencialidade pode ser explicado em termos das representações discursivas (Gilboy, Sopena, Clifton & Frazier, 1995) ou das representações sintático-semânticas (Autor, 2017; este artigo) que são desenvolvidas para as frases. Nosso questionário testou essas abordagens e os resultados estão de acordo com a última: a estrutura sintático-semântica subjacente aos SNs complexos é responsável pelos efeitos de referencialidade relatados na literatura. Argumentamos contra a abordagem discursiva mostrando que ela carece de poder explicativo. Defendemos a abordagem sintático-semântica, mostrando que ela oferece uma explicação mais precisa da referencialidade e como ela pode afetar a interpretação das orações relativas.
