Abstract

This is an interview with Colin Murphy, known for his political and documentary theatre, whose radio play #ANTIGONE addresses contemporary sociocultural issues, such as the growing European anti-immigration sentiment and the rise of authoritarian governments in the West, renewing the relevance of Greek tragedy. This interview contributes to the research area of English Language, Literature and Cultural Studies in the following ways: by offering content that promotes reflection on the contemporaneity of Greek tragedy and the process of adapting classics, by promoting Irish theatre and by promoting and valuing radio drama.

Author Biographies

Ronei Lucas Gonçalves, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina

Ronei Lucas Gonçalves is an MA student at Programa de Pós-Graduação em Inglês (PPGI) at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). He graduated in Letras Inglês at UFSC in 2014 and, since 2019, has been working as a high-school English teacher for Rede Estadual de Educação de Santa Catarina. He is also a member of Núcleo de Estudos Irlandeses (NEI) at UFSC. His research interest lies in Irish Studies, with emphasis on Irish drama and audio drama.

Beatriz Kopschitz Xavier Bastos, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina

Beatriz Kopschitz Bastos is a member of the Postgraduate Programme in English and Vice-chair of Núcleo de Estudos Irlandeses at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. She holds an MA from Northwestern University and a PhD from the University of São Paulo. She completed two post-doctoral research projects in the fields of Irish theatre and cinema at UFSC and was a Visiting Research Fellow at University College Dublin, University of Galway and Trinity College Dublin. Her publications, as editor or co-editor, include: the bilingual series Ireland on Film: Screenplays and Critical Contexts (Humanitas and EdUFSC, 2011-present); Ilha do Desterro 73.2 – The Irish Theatrical Diaspora (2020); Contemporary Irish Documentary Theatre (Bloomsbury, 2020), and a series of Irish plays with a focus on protagonists with disabilities (Iluminuras, 2023-25). She is a recipient of Ireland’s Presidential Distinguished Service Award in the category of Arts, Culture and Sport (2023).
