Utopia cristã e modernista nos romances de Coetzee, A infância de Jesus e Os tempos de escola de Jesus

Resumo

Este artigo aborda, em sua primeira parte, os muitos críticos que têm dificuldade em entender os dois romances de Coetzee, The Childhood of Jesus e Schooldays of Jesus, oferecendo pistas para uma compreensão do experimento de pensamento utópico de Coetzee dentro da estrutura dos ideais cristãos. O segundo argumento reconstrói as reflexões irônicas de Coetzee sobre o futuro das tradições culturais e artísticas ocidentais. Ao localizar  sua reflexão ficcional em uma sociedade utópica, a qual  atingiu uma ordem verdadeiramente igualitária, modelada nos ideais do Cristianismo primitivo e da humildade monástica, Coetzee questiona se, em tal sociedade, ainda há espaço e necessidade para as artes, ou se o sucesso de nossos esforços utópicos racionais levarão ao desaparecimento da arte como a conhecemos há milênios.
