Memory, postmemory and the role of narratives among women writers from the adivasi communities of Goa

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the life narratives “Where have All the Songs and Rituals Gone?” (2019) by Mozinha Fernandes and “A Velip Writes Back” (2019) by Priyanka Velip, members of the Adivasi community of Goa, who consider themselves as the first inhabitants of this Indian state. These narratives have been published in the blog “Hanv Konn. Who am I? Researching the Self” organized by the late professor from the University of Goa, Alito Siqueira, whose aim is to give voice to this marginalized and silenced community. The analysis will be done in terms of the concepts of Postmemory (Hirsch, 1996, 1997, 2008), Trauma (Ginzburg, 2008; Balaev, 2008), Narrative (Bruner, 2002; Coracini, 2007), and Life-narratives (Smith & Watson, 2010).

Andrea Machado de Almeida Mattos, Federal University of Minas Gerais

Graduada em Letras-Inglês pela Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES), possui Especialização em Língua Inglesa pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais, Mestrado em Estudos Linguísticos pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) e Doutorado em Estudos Linguísticos e Literários pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP), com período de Doutorado Sanduiche na University of Manitoba, em Winnipeg, no Canadá. É Professora Adjunta da Faculdade de Letras da UFMG, onde leciona língua inglesa e linguística aplicada para alunos de graduação e pós-graduação. Durante o ano de 2014, cumpriu período de pós-doutoramento na Universidade de Manitoba, em Winnipeg, no Canadá. Seus interesses de pesquisa concentram-se nas áreas de Ensino/Aprendizagem de Língua Estrangeira, Pesquisa Narrativa, Novos Letramentos e Formação de Professores e Educação Crítica de Línguas Estrangeiras.

Cielo G. Festino é doutora em literatura indiana de língua inglesa pela USP. Fez um programa de pós-doutorado sobre o conto nas línguas vernáculas da Índia, de autoria feminina, na Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2010-2012). É professora de literaturas de língua inglesa na Universidade Paulista, São Paulo e professora colaboradora do programa de Mestrado da Universidade Federal de Tocantins. É membro do projeto temático “Pensando Goa. Uma Biblioteca Singular em Língua Portuguesa” (USP/FAPESP). Tem várias publicações sobre literatura indiana, entre elas foi co-editora do volume da revista literária Muse India (vol. 70, 2016),dedicado à literatura de Goa de língua portuguesa, do do livro A House of Many Mansions: Goan Literature in the Portuguese Language. An Anthology of Original Essays, Short Stories and Poems (Margão, Goa: Under the Peepal Tree, 2017) e do volume "Goans on the Move" da Interdisciplinary Journal of Portuguese Diaspora Studies (Vol. 7, 2018).
