Objective: The article reports the experience of Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences – MAST in constructing concept maps of objects and presents its theoretical and methodological foundation.
Method: Bibliographic and documentary research is used as methodological procedures for the analysis of the objects, from a qualitative approach. The elaboration of cultural biographies of objects is combined with the concept map tool, and results in a concept map of an object as a case study.
Results: The approach presented has been adopted on an experimental basis at MAST. To demonstrate the confluence of approaches, a cultural biography of a tide predictor from the National Observatory is presented, followed by version 4 of concept map of the same object.
Conclusions: Concept maps constructed at MAST give visibility to the networks that develop around a museum object. They help to bring different times and spaces closer together, emphasize their relationships with people, institutions, scientific concepts and other objects, and have proven to be potentially useful in raising questions, pointing out paths for new research and applications in different activities developed at the Museum.
