Informational Behavior of Elderly People in the Federal District During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Objective: To understand the informational behavior of elderly during the COVID-19 infodemic.
Methods: A qualitative study was conducted, investigating a sample of residents in Brasília (Distrito Federal, Brasil) through semi-structured telephone interviews. The guiding questions were developed based on Wilson's informational behavior model. After transcribing the interviews, the data were analyzed using Bardin's Content Analysis with the assistance of the OpenLogos software. Three categories were identified: Seeking information about COVID-19, Processing and using information about COVID-19, and Analyzing received information about COVID-19 or the means of disseminating this information.
Results: Participants sought information about Covid-19 both actively and passively, through various means, with television and WhatsApp being the most prominent. Both scientific and non-scientific information were processed and used, especially those aimed at disease prevention. Despite 85% of the sample critically analyzing the information received about the pandemic and/or the means through which it was disseminated, the remainder did not present a critical analysis of the information about the disease.
Conclusions: This knowledge is useful for planning and developing educational measures aimed at improving this population's skills in consuming and processing news and information, as well as encouraging the development of strategies to address the psychosocial consequences arising from the COVID-19 infodemic.
