The use of the Electronic Information System (SEI) by elderly people: a study based on the UTAUT Theory 3

Abstract

Objective: Understand the perception of elderly users of the Sete Lagoas Regional Education Superintendence about the Electronic Information System (SEI), according to the determining factors of the UTAUT Theory 3.

Methods: Descriptive qualitative research and case study method. 16 civil servants aged between 45 and 65 were interviewed. Data was analyzed using content analysis, based on the determining factors of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT 3): Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence, Facilitating Conditions, Hedonic Motivation, Habit and Personal Innovativeness.

Results: The SEI was recognized as an efficient tool for carrying out administrative tasks, standing out for its ability to speed up the processing of documents, in addition to being more sustainable by reducing the use of paper. However, challenges were also pointed out that hinder the user experience and generate resistance. Therefore, the implementation of information systems needs to be accompanied by strategies that consider the human factor, since the potential benefit of technology is only complete if used appropriately.

Conclusions: It presents contributions by expanding the field of empirical research between the intersection of the themes of acceptance and use of technologies, aging and public service. In methodological terms, it stands out by employing a qualitative approach in a quantitative model (UTAUT), enabling subjective perceptions. In the social context, the study highlights the barriers, needs and specific motivations of aging users regarding the acceptance, use and adaptation to new technologies.

Gleisiane Carvalho Fernandes, Unihorizontes University Center

Master in Administration with an emphasis on Innovation Management (2024). Specialized in Accounting, Expertise and Auditing (2014). Graduated in Accounting from the Sete Lagoas University Center Unifemm (2010). Technician in Administration from the Sete Lagoas Technical School. State Public Servant, has worked since 2013 as an Educational Analyst at the State Secretariat of Education, with exercise and assignment at the Sete Lagoas Regional Education Superintendence - MG.

Alyce Cardoso Campos, Federal Institute of Southern Minas Gerais

PhD and Master's Degree in Administration from the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA). Graduated in Administration from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora - Governador Valadares Campus (2017) where she was founder and Marketing Director of the Junior Company TriVallis Consultoria (2014-2016). She is a technician in Business Management with an emphasis on Accounting from Colégio CEST, Ipatinga - MG (2012). She was a professor and researcher of the Academic Master's Degree in Administration at the Unihorizontes University Center. She is currently a tenured professor of the Administration course at the Federal Institute of Southern Minas Gerais (IFSULDEMINAS) - Passos Campus.
