Objective: To analyze the practices used by researchers in Agricultural Sciences in Colombia, in the context of the formulation process of national public policy on Open Science, as a strategic step that resizes the processes of production of scientific knowledge to articulate them from dialogues with social needs.
Method: The study is based on a quantitative approach, supported by research carried out with 188 Colombian researchers in this area. The profile of the researchers and their institutional and individual practices in Open Science during the last three years are presented. The data processing is managed by means of tools that allow the analysis of descriptive and inferential statistics.
Result: The researchers were questioned about the Open Science practices that they recognized in their institutions. The results were: 52% had open access to databases and 55% had open access to their own journal. Curiously, 67% did not use preprints, only 37% publicly published their research data and 75% believe that their institutions did not implement Open Science practices. The results show a high level of utilization of open resources for access to scientific knowledge; however, a low level of utilization was observed in practices implying the participation of territorial actors in defining the methodology and analyzing the results, which does not take into consideration the potential of citizen science.
Conclusions: It is concluded that it is essential to address certain aspects with special emphasis to implement strategies of openness, training and strengthening of public communication practices in science. The researchers identified the need to approach scientific communication as an opportunity to enhance and expand these practices. This is limited by the current incentive structures that prioritize the publication of research results in indexed journals. The use of digital technologies to strengthen open scientific communication will be another area that will require special attention.
