Textual Curation of unpublished works by Oliveira Telles: convergences between Philology and Information Science

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the convergences between Philology and Information Science through textual curation, conceived as an epistemological mediation device that articulates philological editing and information organization in the transformation of manuscripts into informational objects.

Methods: This study adopts a qualitative, theoretical-analytical, and applied approach, based on the study of three unpublished manuscripts by Manuel dos Passos de Oliveira Telles (1859–1935): Christophaneida, Contos e Novelas Sergipenses, and A Conquista de Sergipe. Textual curation is operationalized through four interrelated dimensions: archival identification, semi-diplomatic editing, information representation through structured metadata, and interpretative mediation via explanatory notes and contextualization.

Results: The manuscripts are reconfigured as complex informational objects, in which textual materiality is preserved while contents are organized into structured descriptive frameworks. Findings indicate that semi-diplomatic editing enables a balance between textual fidelity and intelligibility, while information representation enhances retrieval, circulation, and reuse. Textual variants are treated as informational layers, highlighting the interpretative nature of editorial mediation.

Conclusions: Textual curation operates as an interdisciplinary practice that redefines the boundaries between textual criticism and knowledge organization by transforming manuscripts into informational infrastructures. By integrating reading, interpretation, description, and representation, it expands accessibility, preservation, and the circulation of documentary heritage.
