Objective: The objective of this study is to discuss the role played by the book in the design and development of bibliographic documentary practices.
Method: Through discussion of the literature, selected according to the objectives of the article, we initially seek to answer what a book is in its constitution over time, considering supports, formats and ways of organizing content. Then, we explore the book as a document, observing that it is an object produced for this purpose. Following, we deal with the book in its function as a bibliographic document, an adjective that accounts for a documentary attribute, therefore, not inherent to the object. Finally, we discuss the book in the constitution of bibliographic documentary practice, which played a central role in the production of the most known methods and instruments.
Results: We note the preponderance of practices, built from material supports and documentary typologies of each era, to the lack of generalizing theoretical and methodological references, which have as a principle mediation actions on any and all types of objects, according to pragmatic parameters that allow to subsidize the responses to each audience.
Conclusions: We draw attention to the technical-scientific literature of the field and its complex professional practices for indicating relevant constituted knowledge.
