Insights of teaching approaches into common core disciplines in Archivology and Librarianship courses

Abstract

Objective: This paper discusses the teaching of the disciplines Reference and Information Services I and Cultural Action in Information Units, both present in the undergraduate courses in Archival Science and Library Science and Documentation at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF), highlighting the importance and complementary dialogue between both disciplines and their significance for the education of archivists and librarians as information and cultural mediators. It describes the didactic-pedagogical experiences of the professors in the mentioned disciplines, both regarding the development of the course syllabus and in the classroom.

Method: It presents a literature review on Reference Services and Cultural Action in the context of archives and libraries and conducts a Content Analysis using the Categorical Method to analyze the syllabi and program contents of the disciplines.

Result: The results demonstrate that the dialogue between these disciplines provides a more socially-oriented education in the courses of Library Science and Documentation and Archival Science at UFF. Information professionals become capable of being mediators of information and culture in various aspects. The use of strategies inherent to the cyberculture society, such as sharing, connectivity, interactivity, authorship, and collaboration, as well as digital tools, allows students to be active participants in the learning process, rather than mere spectators, in line with the teachings of Paulo Freire, "education for freedom".

Conclusions: the Political-Pedagogical Project that established the common core in the curricula of the courses of Library Science and Documentation and Archival Science at UFF has enabled a fruitful dialogue between these areas, especially the disciplines of Reference and Information Services I and Cultural Action in Information Units, thus contributing to a humanistic and social education of archivists and librarians, who are committed to the mediation of information and culture and to cultural diversity.
