History

Brief Background

Encontros Bibli Journal (EB) was created in the scope of the Department of Information Science of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), with its first issue published in May 1996. Since its creation by Professor Francisco Chagas de Souza, several professors have integrated the Editorial Council, which is composed of professors both from the Department of Information Science of UFSC (CIN) and other universities that took responsibility for the project.

According to Souza (2008, p. 145), the creator and director of the project, "[...] Initially, the idea was to address issues related to library education”. Nonetheless, the development of the scientific journal, as the main formal communication means in the research scope, was fostered as the areas of Library Science, Archival Science, and Information Science (CI) gained more space in Brazil.

The electronic publication of manuscripts since the first issue allows us to evaluate the changes of focus topics throughout the Encontros Bibli Journal history. In the decade 1990, as intended the initial EB proposal, publications on the professional training of Library Science and IS were the most frequent, including curriculum, the teaching of topics linked to disciplines, as well as creation and recognition of courses both in the country and abroad. Starting in 2000, the scientific perspectives of the publications have enlarged and consolidated, with significantly more articles per issue and studies of several topics, encompassing Information Science, Library Science, Archival Science, Museology, and related areas.

Since 2003, the journal has been managed by the Graduate Program in Information Science (PGCIN/UFSC) at the same university, promoting and disseminating knowledge and strategically and operationally stimulating and supporting the development of the Encontros Bibli Journal.

With a semi-annual publication frequency since its release, in 2007 EB transitioned from a local webpage to an Open Journal System, favoring its institutionalization process in the UFSC in 2008, through the release of the UFSC Portal of Journals. Starting in 2012, the publication frequency becomes quarterly.

With increasing visibility both in the country and abroad, the several editorial teams that constitute the journal have overseen practices for improving the quality of the journal and access to scientific information. For this reason, and especially upon its institutionalization, the EB team has offered editorial support to several journals in the UFSC by sharing the management of the UFSC Journal Portal.

In 2019, EB starts projects of publication modernization by adopting the research workflow of continuous publication of articles, focusing on publishing decisions and research data, always seeking to align with good national and international practices for actions and movements of Open Science.

Since November 2019, our articles have been indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) of the Web of Science, property of Clarivate Analytics, the former Thomson Reuters, a database of world scientific relevance. In the same year, EB became part of the Redalyc, a bibliographic database and of digital library of open-access journals, supported by the Autonomous University do Mexico State.

In 2021, Encontros Bibli Journal is indexed by the SciVerse Scopus, a database of abstracts and citations of articles for academic journals, covering around 19.5 thousand titles from over 5,000 international publishing houses, with 16,500 peer-reviewed journals of the scientific, technical, medical, and social sciences fields.
