Freedom of thought and freedom of expression in democratic societies: from the broad right to the imposed limits

Abstract

The central idea of this work is to analyze some significant characteristics of freedom of thought, opinion, and expression as constitutive foundations of democratic societies. If freedom of expression is essential for democracy, how can we understand the need for limits on the free expression of thoughts? What are the risks of limits becoming censorship? How can we ensure freedom of expression without endangering fundamental rights? These are some of the questions that will guide the analysis in this article.

Professor Titular do DTPEN/UFPR - área de Filosofia e do Mestrado Profissional em Filosofia da UFPR. Coordenador do Curso de Pós-graduação Lato Sensu em Filosofia da Educação: Ética, Política e Educação - UFPR. Membro do núcleio de sustentação do GT Teorias da Justiça - ANPOF. Membro da Sociedade Kant Brasileira. Doutor em Filosofia pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul - PUCRS (2003), com doutorado sanduíche na Université de Toulouse II - Le Mirail (2001-2002).
