Language education, decoloniality, and the right to a heteroglossic and opaque ideology

This article aims to explore the future of language studies, and in particular, language education vis-à-vis contemporary challenges. In doing so, it departs from the lenses of decolonial thought to reimagine concepts in the field of language studies. In order to decolonize language practices and language education, it is essential to dismantle ingrained constructs that result from the legacy of language acquisition theories largely guided by cognitive and structuralist orientations. The article will focus on two highly relevant concepts in the field: the monoglossic ideology founded on the fiction of so-called named languages, and the western understanding of communication and its desire for totality, comprehension, and intelligibility. Such fractal movement will explore the concepts of coloniality of language, linguistic racism, and raciolinguistics as these are taken as fundamental ideas if one wishes to embrace a heteroglossic linguistic orientation and a welcoming attitude to the opaque condition of communication. The article concludes by reaffirming the fruitful critical renewal of language studies under a critical and decolonial perspective and the subsequent potentialities to think language eduction otherwise.
