Juliette De Maeyer: “Epistemology is the fundamental question: How can journalism report on the world, and how can it do so accurately?”

Abstract

This interview aims to introduce the work of Belgian researcher Juliette De Maeyer to the Brazilian public. PhD in Communication and Information from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), in Belgium, and professor at the Communication department at the Université de Montréal (UdeM), in Canada, De Maeyer has a keen eye for the intersections between technology and the epistemology of journalism. In her research, she applies a socio-historical perspective to understand how major concepts in the field of journalism, such as objectivity and news values, are impacted by technological development. In the interview, she talks about her recent work, including the collection on American journalist and intellectual Franklin Ford, who developed a concept for a new, utopian media infrastructure at the beginning of the 20th century.
