The imaginary foundations of the Brazilian far right: the “professor” Olavo de Carvalho

This study investigated the imaginaries of the Brazilian far right on a digital platform. We aimed to identify the socio-discursive imaginaries mobilized in these digital-television textualities. Our theoretical and methodological foundation was based on the notion of socio-discursive imaginaries, in conjunction with contemporary philosophical and sociological debate on the subject. The empirical sample was a video lecture by the self-proclaimed philosopher, Olavo de Carvalho, recognized as the intellectual guru of the far right. We observed the following imaginaries in the analyzed discourses: 1- Transgression and revolt (Polarization – “us against them”); 2- Idealized past: tradition, religion, and order as truth (Moral panic); 3- Conspiracies and anti-communism: fear of the criminal enemy in hiding; 4- Media narratives are just narratives – post-truth. We perceive that the pathetic discursive dimension is privileged to the detriment of logos; belief-based knowledge prevails over knowledge-based knowledge.
