Abstract

This essay aims to highlight the contributions of professor and researcher Nilson Lage to the debate on the complex relations between media and public opinion. Published in 1998, the book Controle da opinião pública summarizes the author's reflections on the 'convenient truth' and maintains current strength to understand waves of disinformation in digital networks. By retrieving the theoretical and contextual bases that underlie Lage's study, the text presents historical aspects around the formation of public opinion in scenarios of authoritarianism, resumes the author's hypotheses about opinion control and proposes a dialogue around the disinformation dissemination processes that reconfigure the expression of opinion and the creation of consensus in the digital environment.
