Autonomy and discrimination of people with disabilities: discursive formations of journalists

Abstract

This paper seeks to determine how press professionals who have some kind of physical, intellectual or visual disability construct meanings about the autonomy and the discrimination faced by this social group, particularly on the job market. For that, nine journalists with different background and different degrees of disability were interviewed. This work comprises, first, a phase of bibliographic and documentary research, and after applies the discourse analysis to the testimonials. The discursive sequences were taken from interviews conducted for the production of an end-of-course written paper in Journalism. The work is justified as it proposes to investigate a topic that reaches at least 23.9% of the Brazilian population who, according to the 2010 IBGE census, has some degree of disability.
