Journalistic coverage in ways of tenderness: the sensory narrative of Eliane Brum

Abstract

On a normative perspective of Communication (WOLTON, 2004, 2006), this article is dedicated to investigate the journalistic dynamics triggered by Eliane Brum in the text Os vampiros da realidade só matam pobres (The vampires of reality only kill poor), produced for the book Dignidade! (Dignity!, 2012), in the context of celebrating the 40 years of operation of the Doctors Without Borders organization. In Brum’s report on Bolivian peasants affected by Chagas’ disease, we discuss the presence of parameters of dialogical treatment (BUBER, 1979) and sensorial (MEDINA, 2016), outlining a narrative that is open to author mediation and intersubjectiveness. Contrary to the positivist grammar that guides the professional culture, it is proposed, therefore, the adoption of tenderness (RESTREPO, 1998) as a guiding procedure for journalistic verification.
