The main purpose of this articleis to examine some projectionsabout the economic impacts of theOlympic Games in Rio de Janeiroin 2016. Looking at the BarcelonaGames (1992), Sydney (2000)and Beijing (2008), notes that thismega event can be a catalyst forinvestments in urban infrastructureand help boost tourism and createjobs. However, in general, theprojected results tend to overestimatethe benefits the Games canoffer, thus seeking to legitimizegovernment spending, which arevital to enable the completion ofthe Games. The article presents thebudget of the ambitious Olympic Rio-2016. He tries to argue that theOlympics could be very beneficial, but for the few economic sectorsand social needs, concentrated inthe host city. To avoid misuse ofpublic resources, as was the caseof the Olympics in Athens (2004)and Pan American Games in Rio deJaneiro (2007), this article emphasizesthe need to improve democraticmechanisms for decision-makingand provide transparency in budgetimplementation. In the end, arguesthat the main legacies of the 2016Olympic Games will not be in theeconomic field.Downloads
