Abstract

The article argues that at the very moment when liberalism seems triumphal over communism and has dominated the world it might be helpful to recover the defeated idea of communism precisely in its relationship with the liberal idea. The starting point is the thought of Karl Marx, undoubtedly the most important thinker of this trend. With that in view, the article follows Marx´s thought from his earlier writings to his latest trying to identify traces of liberalism (in its highest sense). It argues as well that between ideal communism and real socialism one can find the same incompatibility that
can be found between ideal liberalism and real liberalism, that
is, economic liberalism. The conclusion is that a socialist culture, free from the ideology and the immediacy of politics now belongs to history and its destiny should to be represented by future researches as a consolidated heritage to be attained in order to allow the accomplishment of new and more advanced reflections.
