Abstract

Translating is not “just” transferring ideas from one language to another with minimal losses and distortion. As a consequence of current consumer needs (thus current supplier needs), translating now includes the 88 Fuad Azzam concepts of “translating at a competitive price” and “translating with consistent terminology” – not to mention quality service, tight time frames, and so many other things the translators are learning to deliver along with their work. The “competitive price” and “consistent terminology” issues would be enough to justify, in the technical area, the use of translation memory and terminology management software. However, believing that simply buying software and being able to use it would solve these issues would be main one being the need to think more. Thinking, deciding, organizing: well, if we become owners of a translation unit database and of a terminology database, then we need to know how to use these assets. If we leverage items from other projects, we need to have perfect control over how this leverage is performed. Managing translation memories and glossaries emerges as a new task; however, more than merely creating additional work, it optimizes the use of our assets and avoids – sometimes expensive – errors during utilization.
