Abstract

This paper aims at: a) problematizing the dichotomy mother tongue vs foreign language, hypothetizing that both of them constitute subjectivity; b) finding out how translators see themselves, which representations constitute their imaginary about language, translation, what means being translator, what relationship they consider between theory and practice, how they relate languages, scholar and socially isolated, and how they feel in these languages as subjects constituted in them and by them. Seven interviews and a writing questionnaire answered by fourty translators have been analysed. It is possible to note that the translator remains in the tension of his life-story, his professional formation, modified by the other, by the language-culture of the other to whom he identifies himself and from whom he distinguishes, due to marketing demands, and the representations or images of the reader. Keywords: translator’s identity, discourse, subjectivity, theory and practice, interpretation.
