Author Guidelines

Articles submitted to Alexandria must be original and must not be under consideration or submitted to any other journal during the editorial process. Authors must ensure that their article aligns with the journal’s focus and scope and that they are familiar with the peer review policies as well as the ethics and best practices for publication.

Articles will be published in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, with abstracts in Portuguese and English.

After the acceptance of articles in Portuguese, the journal invites the authors to translate the text into English and/or Spanish, with translation costs being the responsibility of the authors. The translated version of the article will only be published upon submission of a declaration from a professional reviewer or translator. Non-native authors of English or Spanish must submit a declaration from a reviewer or professional translator when submitting the original article in English or Spanish.

An author may have a maximum of two articles published per year in Alexandria. This rule applies regardless of the author's position in the article’s authorship.

On submission

All files must be submitted through the journal’s platform: https://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/alexandria/about/submissions

  • The notes template must be completed and signed by all the authors (scanned or electronic signature). It must be submitted separately from the article in the system. [mandatory]
  • The report generated by plagiarism detection software (such as iThenticate, CopySpider, Plagium, Plagiarism, among others) must be submitted separately from the article in the system. [mandatory]
  • Data sets, if applicable, can be sent as supplementary documents in the system. [optional]
  • Permissions for the use of any copyrighted material, such as illustrations, graphs, translations, and/or any other sources, with authorization issued by the rights holder or publisher. [when applicable]

Manuscript preparation

Manuscripts must be submitted in .docx format, using Arial font, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing. The word limit is 10,000 words, including figures, tables, and references. They must also include abstracts in Portuguese and English, with a maximum of 150 words each, as well as up to five keywords related to the theme of the work, in both Portuguese and English. For articles submitted from abroad, assistance with the preparation of the abstract in Portuguese may be provided by the editors.

Pages should be numbered in the centralized footer. In the body of the text, authors must remove any identifying marks while the work is being assessed.

Citations and references must follow the guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA), 7th edition. Articles submitted using ABNT formatting will be rejected.

All works cited must be referenced and all works in the list of references must be cited in the body of the text, indicating the correct correspondence between the parts.

In-text citations

The standard used by APA guidelines is author-date, including the author’s last name and the publication date in the body of the text, with page numbers indicated when applicable. Please do not use source indications in footnotes or endnotes.

APA guidelines do not provide for the use of terms such as apud, op. cit, id., ibid., or others, so these should not appear in articles.

Examples:

One author: Netto (2001) or (Netto, 2001). Two authors: Motta-Júnior and Lombardi (2002) or (Motta-Júnior & Lombardi, 2002). Three or more authors: Villani et al. (2001) or (Villani et al. 2001).  If two citations are the same when abbreviated with et al., cite the last names of the first authors and as many others as necessary to distinguish them from other works used. Et al. should not be italicized. For laws and decrees: Law 10.639 (2003) or (Law 10.639, 2003). Official documents: MEC (2012) or (MEC, 2012).

When there is more than one work by the same author and from the same year, add lowercase letters, as shown in the example: (Davidson, 2000a, 2000b). When there is more than one citation within the same parentheses, they should be listed in alphabetical order by the last name of the first author (according to the reference list) and separated by semicolons: (De Toni et al., 2000; Girard, 1984; Grovum, 1988; Steindel et al., 1993). For authors with the same last name: (P. Freire, 1996; C. Freire, 1996).

Indirect citations do not need to indicate the pages consulted. For example: According to Moraes (2007), our observations are guided by the knowledge we already possess.

Direct quotations with fewer than 40 words should be inserted normally into the text with double quotation marks.  When the direct quotation have 40 words or more, they should be detached from the text, with a 1.25 cm indentation from the left margin (at the same place where a paragraph begins) and without quotation marks. Use the “Citation” style to standardize the formatting. The direct quotation should include the page number from which the information was taken. Example: (Moraes, 2007, p. 197). If the original excerpt is on more than one page: (Freire, 1996, pp. 87-88).

Avoid using citation of citation. If essential, follow the example: (Freire, 1996, as cited in Delizoicov, 2020, p. 102).

Only sources that are cited in the text should appear in the list of references.

Reference list

Please include in the reference list only the works cited within the body of the text.

The reference list should be presented at the end of the article with 1,5 line spacing, and a 1,25 cm indentation from the second line of each reference. The list should be organized alphabetically by the author’s last name, according to APA guidelines. Do not use “et al.”; list all authors.

When the cited source has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), it must be included in the reference.

Tables and figures

Use tables to represent numerical or textual information and figures for illustrations, graphs, photographs or other visual elements. No nomenclature other than “table” and “figure” should be used.

Tables and figures should be inserted in the body of the text, aligned with the left margin, in the best place after the end of the paragraph in which they were first mentioned. They should be numbered with Arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text.  In the case of an appendix containing figures or tables, use uppercase letters and Arabic numerals (e.g. Table A1).

Identification should appear at the top, and notes, if any, at the bottom. In the case of tables and figures taken from other documents, insert the source at the bottom next to the notes area.

A blank line should be included between the number (Table 1 or Figure 1) and the title.

Titles should be brief and self-explanatory, with initial capital letters and in italics, positioned below the word “Table” or “Figure”, according to the journal’s template. Please do not use vertical borders or borders around each cell.

Tables must be editable within the article file. In the case of figures, regardless of the software used to create them, the output format should be of high quality and with a resolution that allows clear identification of the information.

Aiming for accessibility for blind and visually impaired individuals, the journal Alexandria emphasizes that figures and tables need context so that screen reader software can convey the content to the reader. Therefore, to ensure your text is accessible to all, only use these resources if they are strictly necessary. In the case of figures, provide a detailed description of the image using Microsoft Word’s alternative text feature or by inserting a textual description below the figure.

For additional details on how to elaborate tables and figures, insert units of measurement, textual information, etc., authors should consult the APA Publication Manual (7th edition).

Explanatory notes

Notes should be avoided and used only when strictly necessary, in a concise manner. They must be presented as footnotes and numbered sequentially.
