Roger Casement no século XXI: as faces públicas e privadas de um herói irlandês multimídia

Resumo

Sir Roger Casement (1864-1916) era um diplomata no Serviço Colonial Britânico e um nacionalista irlandês que foi enforcado por alta traição em Londres em 1916. A primeira parte deste artigo oferece uma visão crítica do material que foi publicado sobre Casement, seu trabalho humanitário no Congo e na Amazônia peruana e seu julgamento em Londres, incluindo biografias e edições de seus próprios escritos, particularmente os chamados Diários Negros, bem como as várias dramatizações desse material para o palco e outras mídias, concentrando-se nas que foram produzidos no século XXI. A segunda parte do artigo consiste no relato em primeira pessoa do autor de As Duas Mortes de Roger Casement (posteriormente traduzida para o inglês como The Two Deaths of Roger Casement), que estreou em São Paulo em 2016, comentando sobre o relacionamento da peça com suas fontes e as decisões que foram tomadas no processo criativo.
